Detection of 2020 Flooded Areas in Cambodia

Seasonal rains were made worse by a tropical storm, causing flash floods in Cambodia. Floods spread across some parts of Cambodia beginning in early October 2020. At least, 10 people lost their lives and more than 14,000 people are being affected and displayed, their houses and crop lands were destroyed. Around 40,000 hectares of crops and paddy fields have been inundated.

To provide near real-time information about the floods to the communities and local authorities, The LEET and Krumap in collaboration with scientists at the Asian Institute of Technology and Chulalongkorn University developed a Web platform to detect the flooded areas using the Sentinel-1 SAR imagery in Google Earth Engine. The map is updated every 3 days. We used Google and Here technologies to geolocate the flooded areas for quick prevention and responses to the crisis.
